Last time round i wrote about decisions
The decisions you take, their consequences and implications
This blog im going to look what can influence how those choices are taken
What you base your decisions on
Or specifically why you sometimes chose NOT to do something…maybe something you know you WANT to do
When you make a decision…..what are you generally basing that decision on?
Previous experience?? Other peoples experiences?? Expectations??
We are creatures of habit, comfort and safety
We like feeling competent, we like being confident in our abilities and success at stuff we try
This need for a positive outcome is what we use to make those decisions a lot of the time
Its this that can be our own limiting factor
I know, ive been there on more than one occasion…in fact a lot
The fear of failure is a horrible thing…the what if….buts…maybe’s
For me these are less about the physical tasks and if im capable of doing those
but more the ‘’putting myself out there/publicity/awareness/presenting to the world’’ stuff
For you these could be fitness, health or nutrition
‘ i cant run, im not a runner’ ‘ i cant lift weights’ ‘im not supposed to be lean’ ‘im big boned’ ‘i don’t do well on a restrictive diet’ yadda yadda
Maybe you mask this with i don’t have time/ too busy/ ill start when the kids are older/ im enjoying myself at the moment
I have heard all these before
And i don’t questions peoples beliefs at all…thats not my job…your thoughts and beliefs are true to you
My job is to challenge them, and to help persuade you to change your own thoughts
To enlighten you as to what you are ACTUALLY capable of…
Which is usually a whole lot more than you give yourself credit for are stronger than you think
You are fitter than you give yourself credit for
You can be stricter if you want to be
You can achieve results that you thought were not possible
This is never more evident than when i start resistance training with clients, strength training with my female clients in particular
This is a great protocol to use in fat lose, health, physical strength and body composition change for everyone…i mean everyone
Even more than this its a great protocol to use for mindset change
But when i walk into a clients house with a barbell and weight plate’s there’s usually a look of disbelief on their face
You expect me to lift THAT
Having never used let alone lifted heavy weights, only seen in the gym being used by big lumps of men
But within a few weeks, when said clients are deadlifting up towards their own body weight and enjoying the feeling of being strong
Those self beliefs are broken
New beliefs are engrained
But what would it be like to not have those limiting factors to start with
What if you approached every decision with the thought process that it might JUST BE POSSIBLE
That you could achieve it
And even if you don’t you would have learnt something in the process, and would have progressed closer to achieving that goal
So why not try this approach
Say yes to everything that you have wanted to try but held back
Attempted any task that you wanted to undertake but were reluctant to try for fear of failure
Its usually not as bad or as difficult as those stories you have built up in your head
The more you try these things the easier it becomes to approach everything with the same mentality
The more you try, the more you get done, achieve, and more positive you are
Success doesn’t breed success
Trying more breeds success
Trying and failing breeds CONFIDENCE to try more things without consequence of failure
So why not start today
Lose any thoughts that you aren’t capable
I cant lift that
Id never finish that race
Id never be able to master that skill
Im not …. enough to …..
I haven’t got time
And see where it leads you on to
Keep an eye out for an article im writing on exactly those clients that are lifting weights that they never imagined they were capable of, how they felt before and how they feel afterwards
so pick something youve been putting off and attempt it as soon as you can
you might just surprise yourself
